It is true that there are different writing styles suited for different genres of stories? I don’t think that any sane writer would go free flow with punctuations in an academic paper. Why? That is because they are writing to a specific kind of audience.
In many cases, writing is meant for another. Writers have to write in a way that gives the reader a sense of completion. This is because writing is a one-way form of communication. The writer sends the message, but the reader cannot.
Does this mean that writing in all its glory is actually is restrictive? Of course not. Every sentence contains a writer’s fingerprint. His/her thoughts, personality, values. Many times, after I write an essay, I feel drained, as if a part of me has bled into the paper and has altogether become a new thing in it.
